Collection Update: New Cels

Cel collecting is still our main collecting interest but we no longer get to add as often as we'd like to. We still managed to snag a couple of nice pieces in the last few months though.

First up a Crazy faced Luna:

It's just not a cel gallery update without a Sailor Moon cel, and usually one of the delightful Moon cats. Today we have this great cel of a swirly eyed Luna, we haven't IDed the episode yet, but given the amount of time Luna spends exasperated it could be from almost any ep in any season.

Second is Jingoro from Kimagure Orange Road:

This AMV made use fall in love with Jingoro, the big fat cat from KOR. We've been looking for a cel of him since we first saw it many years ago. Unfortunately finding art of Jingoro has proved difficult and while we snagged a sketch of him previously we'd never seen a cel of him. So I was thrilled to find this cel and give it to Jen for Christmas.

Third is this model cel from the Mario Cartoon:

The Mario cartoon series isn't great, but I've always loved it regardless. So I was thrilled to get this model cel of Mario. I'm a little sad that only one Mario is painted, but given that I haven't seen any other model cels from the series I'm pretty excited to have snagged this one at all.

Finally this gorgeous shot of Shuro from Ayashi no Ceres:

Shuro was always one of the more interesting celestial descendants due to her gender swapping and singing career. Like all the descendants of Ceres she's also absolutely gorgeous (luckily for the boys on our prettiest anime boys list she identifies as female when given the opportunity or she'd might have had to dethrone one of them). Ceres cels are really hit or miss in terms of quality but this one is one of the best looking ones we've seen and we're happy to have in our collection.

That's it for now, not that many but still some really beautiful pieces we feel very lucky to own. We hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we do.

Collection Update: Cel Gallery Update

We recently had the chance to add some more niece piece to our cel collection and we're thrilled to share them.

First up Toon Makers Sailor Moon cel:

This features the alternate universe Sailor Moon in what we can only assume is some version of Moon Tiara action. There's several intersting costume changes from the real Sailor moon we all know and love like the extra tired sleeves, the higher necked bodices, the pink accent color and of course her hair style.  Even more interesting is that on one of her sketches, her vaguely moon shaped broach is a rose instead. Both the sketches can be viewed in our cel gallery. I think anyone who's a Sailor moon fan is happy that the Toon Makers version of Sailor Moon never made it past the pilot stage. However as collectors who love cels and getting some of the weirdest Sailor Moon merchandise we can this cel is an exciting find.

Next is Jajuka from the Escaflowne movie:

The escaflowne movie has redesigned characters as opposed to the anime and we personally prefer them, though honestly we're pretty happy with just about anything Nobuteru Yuki does character designs for and he did both movie and TV series. In any case we've been looking for some nice cels from the movie for some time, our search has mostly been focuse on Allen but with Jen's cat collecting habits Jajuka isn't surprising. This cel has really great art, from the movement in his hair, to his piercing eyes, and even the blood spray, it's all beautiful.

Next Vampire Princess Miyu OVA Miyu:

This is beautiful shot of Miyu from one of the OVAs we actually spotted this shot when we last watched them a few months back, but then promptly forgot which one it's from. Really gorgeous art here though the little details make this really special like the two small strands of hair framing the side of her face, her individual eyelashes and the slight dip in her Kimono, Such a lovely piece we're pleased to have added to our collection

Finally Kohaku from the Wish Music Video:

We both really liked the Wish Manga and are sad that it never got it's own anime. At least we got a cute music video to collect cels from, unfortunately as there is only a short music video cels are very rare. We've been after a nice cel of adult Kohaku for a long time and when this one popped up we didn't hesitate to buy it immediately. She's loks so beautiful and serene here right before she opens her hands to Suichiro. We're very happy to have it in our collection.

Those are our favorites among our most recent additions, but we have a few more new pieces in our cel gallery. We hope you enjoy looking at them at much as we do :)

Collection Oddities: Dr. Mario Witch Doctor Commercial Animation Cel

Almost our entire cel collection could be a collection oddity as they're one of a kind and while others might have similar cels, rarely will there be an exact copy. This cel though is rarer than most as it's from a commercial which by nature are short and even when fully animated don't have a lot of artwork available and it's from a commercial that's mostly live action. The animation section where this cel comes from  is on screen for less than a full second!

So here it is in all it's glory:

We don't want to know what Mario's plans for that thermometer are.
This is from the most well remembered of the 3 US Dr. Mario commercials, the Witchdoctor. Which I seem to remember also being a print ad. This is a really well composed shot considering that Mario spends part of his half second screen time squinting his eyes shut while stomping and we had previously bought a very rough sketch from that part of the sequence a year prior to getting this cel. We also have this cel and it's matching animator's sketch available for viewing in our cel gallery.  To check out Mario's brief appearance you can watch the commercial:

For obvious reasons we wouldn't have expected to get any art from such a short sequence let alone 2 sketches and a cel. We're incredibly happy to own such a unqiue piece of Video Game and Commercial History.

If you're interesting in owning your own piece of video game commercial history we currently have several sketches and even a cel from the original 1983 Donkey Kong Cereal Commercial available for sale in our shop.
